One May day in an inn on the King’s Highway, a number of travelers meet, and discovering that they are going in the same direction, they decide to continue the journey together. A Squire and his little son are among the party, and to amuse the boy, it is agreed each time they stop to rest, one of their number will tell a tale. And marvelous tales they tell! Mysterious smiths, royal riddles, wishing wells and ancient harpers chase one another through these pages, stirring the heart, and lingering in the imagination long after the last story reaches its end.
