In the spring of 1568, a babe was plucked from the wreckage of a vessel off the coast of England by Master Talbot, a captain in Queen Elizabeth's service. He and his wife adopt the young lass to replace a daughter of their own so recently lost. The small gold cross and scroll of unusual writing found among her swaddling clothes, together with the marks branded on her shoulder blades, indicate she is no usual babe. The Talbots christen her Cicely and raise her as their own until the imprisoned Mary Queen of Scots takes a fancy to her. Follow the fortunes of Mary and Cicely as their destinies intertwine, accompanied by lots of intrigue, deceit, and questions of identity in this fictional narrative.
